When someone opens up about their pain, your response can either build a bridge—or a wall.
We’ve all been there: not knowing what to say, defaulting to clichés, or nervously shifting the focus. But emotional support is a skill—and one we can all improve.
đź’¬ Try saying:
- “That sounds really hard. I’m here for you.”
- “I don’t have all the answers, but I’m willing to listen.”
- “Is there anything you need right now?”
- “Would you like comfort or solutions?” (This one can work wonders.)
đźš« Avoid saying:
- “It could be worse.”
- “Just think positive!”
- “Everything happens for a reason.”
- “At least…” (Try to ditch the silver linings.)
Being present, validating someone’s feelings, and resisting the urge to fix—it’s harder than it sounds. But it’s one of the most powerful forms of emotional support we can offer.
Let’s talk:
What’s something someone said to you during a hard time that really helped?
Or—what didn’t help?
Your words might help someone else become a better support system tonight.
